There are events that feel genuinely rare, and a rehearsal dinner on Malibu Pier is one of them. As a Malibu DJ, working a public pier the night before a Bel-Air Bay Club wedding is exactly the kind of job that stays with you. The night before the wedding, 70 guests gathered on one of the most iconic stretches of coastline in Southern California for an evening that started warm and golden and settled into something intimate and beautifully still.
Nikki from Fetelle Designs transformed the pier into something that felt entirely private, despite being open to the public. Shrub walls created a sense of enclosure, string lights ran the length of the space, and a custom circular bar anchored the center of it all. For anyone walking past on the public pathway, it looked like something out of a film.
Malibu Pier is still a working pier, which means setup occupies one side only and load-in is its own adventure. The surface is rough, foot traffic is continuous, and the DJ booth placement was pre-selected before I arrived. My job was to say yes and figure out how to make it work.
I ran a speaker cable over 200 feet from the booth so guests at the far end of the pier could hear clearly throughout dinner. The wireless mic receiver plugged directly into that speaker, which meant toasts carried cleanly all the way down without any drop in quality. I also positioned a speaker in the center of the space and a booth monitor next to me on the far end. That way every area was covered evenly, and I could hear the mix as well. It is always important to arrive early and come prepared with extra cable.
The set moved through phases without me being given any direction. I love to play the music clients suggest, as well as when I am fully trusted to set the vibe. I always appreciate and honor the challenge of scoring such an important and intimate event.
I opened warm and upbeat, the kind of California energy that fits a sunset over the Pacific with people who are celebrating something. Michael Jackson, Elvis, Crazy Town's "Butterfly", "Sh-Boom" by The Chords, "Lay Down Sally". Music that feels familiar, joyful, fresh, and eclectic all at once. Check out the mix here.
As the sun dropped and the air cooled, the set shifted naturally into something more relaxed, even spinning "Sunset Lover" by Petit Biscuit. By the time guests were settled into plated dinner under the string lights, the music had found its way to something quieter and more intimate, complementing the sound of the ocean and the guests enjoying each other company over a meal with Kacey Musgraves, and Willie Nelson.
The Music
That balance matters more on a public pier than almost anywhere else. The natural sounds of the waves and the wildlife are part of the environment. Music that ignores that feels out of place while music that works with it elevates the whole experience. A few members of the public stopped mid-walk to ask for a card. That moment is always a good sign, as there is nothing worse than someone playing music on the beach when it disrupts from the natural beauty.
The Public Element
The wedding the following day was at Bel-Air Bay Club, one of the most sought-after venues on the California coast. A rehearsal dinner on Malibu Pier leading into a Bel-Air Bay Club wedding is the kind of weekend that only happens in Los Angeles.
